Should Businesses Do Social Media or Social Media ...

What’s in a word?  A lot has happened in the Social Web and yet, one may have to consider: To do Social Media or Social Media Marketing?  The first term is for newbies and the latter, for businesses who are serious in using social media for their marketing.  Understand This: The impact of social media has made it easier for people to share information online and yet, it is one of the most overlooked marketing tool because of one thing: You must understand how to use it for your business needs, how your customers are interacting on it, and what goals you have to make your campaign truly effective.

It’s simply a no-brainer!  Social Media is NOT About the Media, It’s About Building Relationships With People You Do Business With… and it doesn’t really matter if you’d like to call it ‘social media’ or ‘social media marketing’.

Relationships… are the ultimate key to understanding how people perceive your brand these days and it only makes sense to know how to manage these bonds better.  As our world has become more digital and in some ways, less personal, the importance of these relationships has increased.  With ...

What’s eating you? US study highlights bedbu...

At the meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, North Carolina State University (NCSU) researchers lead by Coby Schal and Ed Vargo presented preliminary research on the genetic diversity of populations of bedbugs. Their DNA analysis showed the diversity is low within a single building. The researchers discovered that the bugs can inbreed and evolve at the same time.

A part of the research included extensive DNA analysis of genetics of bed bugs in different apartments. The diversity was lower than it would be for a population of most other species. Coby Schal said, "We kept discovering the same thing. Within a given apartment, or even a given building, there was extremely low genetic diversity. In most cases there's just a single female that founded the population."

Another NCSU anthologist Zachary Adelman, not one of the researchers, said that the fact of different strains of bedbugs in the United States east coast "means they're coming into the country from lots of different places".

The discovery shows that pesticides are ineffective if they don't eliminate the entire population. Just a few survivors can produce a new generation within the house or building quickly; and, as the offspring ...

Google Rocks Latest Holiday Doodle

As it's done in years past, Google's put a bit of holiday cheer on its usually stark white search page.

The new design went live today ahead of Christmas. The doodle changes colors and plays "Jingle Bells" after users light up each note with their mouse. Clicking on the page itself does a search for "happy holidays."

The design itself is strongly reminiscent of the glowing Lite-Brite toys, which light up in various colors after being poked through thick, black construction paper. Once animated it looks like plain old holiday lights.

Last year's doodle was a bit more abstract, with a smattering of paintings that could be hovered over to enlarge. Together they spelled out Google, though at first glance looked more like a funky art exhibit. This time around, it's a fixture of easily identifiable holiday symbology, with snowflakes, Santa Claus, bells, snowman, candle, and wrapped present.

Google Adds New Updates to Google+ Social Network

Google on Monday added a few updates to its Google+ social network, including a more detailed notifications bar, redesigned photo viewing, and the ability to hide or highlight certain people.

"Some of these were on nearly everyone's wishlist ... and some we hope will be welcome surprises," Google said in a blog post.

Up first is the option to "pump up (or down) the volume" on the frequency with which you see certain peoples' updates. Using a slider tool atop the stream for a particular Circle, you can opt to see more or less from a Circle so you don't miss important updates. If people in your "Work" Circle tend to post constantly, possibly causing you to miss some posts from the "Family" Circle, you can opt to hear less from work folks and more from family.

Facebook has a similar option; click the drop-down arrow to the right of a certain update on your newsfeed and Facebook will allow you to select all updates, most updates, or only important updates from that person.

Next up for Google+, though, is more useful notifications. The social network has a red notifications button atop your page when you ...

What I Learned From Jim Hillyer: Social Media is a...

I’ve written a couple of posts in the past on this topic, but people obviously still need educating.

Social media tools like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are amplifiers.  They can take the good and the bad and amplify the effects.  The message no longer falls on the ears of 10, 50, or 500 people, but is heard around the world.

This can be powerful in positively influencing your personal brand, but it can also damage your personal brand.

This is a lesson that Conservative MP, Jim Hillyer learned this week.

At the end of the second reading to end the gun registry, Hillyer was caught on cameracelebrating with finger gun motions.

The fact that the same day was the anniversary of the massacre at Montreal’s École Polytechnique where 14 women were killed, only fueled the anger that ensued.

The New Weapon

In the wild west, cowboys had to check their guns at the saloon doors because that was their weapon.

The explosion of social media and mobile have introduced a new weapon.  Your personal brand is much easier (and more legal) to destroy than your life.

I’ve given numerous presentations where I talk about the concept of think before you post.  I think that needs ...
