Apple’s Battles for iPad Trademark in China

On Wednesday, Chinese court began hearing Apple’s appeal against Proview Electronics Co. The verdict of the higher court, which is not announced immediately, is usually final under Chinese law.

Apple Inc. is fighting a Chinese company over its right to use the iPad trademark in China. The company has appealed against the decision to stop selling iPad in China under different name and a Shenzhen court located in China agreed to hear the case.

The case moved to the high court after the Intermediate People's Court in Shenzhen rejected Apple's complaint against Proview Technology over the infringement case.

On Wednesday, Apple and Proview lawyers exchanged arguments during the court hearing, which lasted more than six hours, but no decision was announced.

“Among consumers across the world, the iPad trademark is already uniquely connected with Apple,” said company lawyer Shi Yusheng. “When consumers see a tablet with an iPad trademark, they know it comes from Apple, and not from another company.”

Proview’s lawyers, however, said Apple has no authority to sell off the iPad trademark for mainland China.

“However, if Apple wants to legally obtain permission to use the trademark, or to own the trademark by legal transfer, ...

Ubuntu 12.04 Adds Launcher Customization

I started using Ubuntu 12.04 on my main PC a couple of days ago to keep an eye on the upcoming changes and today I noticed two major changes silently added to the 'User Interface' settings option. One of my grips with Unity was the lack of any customization of Launcher's size and position. I also wanted the launcher to stay visible all the time so that I don't have to wait for it to appear.

Two changes have landed on Ubuntu 12.04 daily builds that address my problem.

Under the UI settings there are now two tabs, in the first tab 'Appearance' the team has moved the options to choose wallpapers towards the right side. What is interesting is that you will notice a new option at the bottom which says 'Launcher icon size'. This was one of the most important features as will help users to control the size of the launcher - which will also save space.

The second option rests on the newly added tab called 'Behavior'. At the moment there are two options available. Enabling and disabling the 'auto-hiding' of the Launcher. So, now you can turn off the automatic ...

Apple’s iBookstore Witnesses 350,000 iBooks Downlo...

Apple’s iBooks-2, a digital textbook launched last week, haven’t convinced everyone as the company claimed that classroom is a very suitable place for iPad, though more than 350,000 textbook downloads in the first 3 days suggests a big demand for the iOS in classrooms. These figures were revealed by the proprietary monitoring system for Global Equities Research. However, free iBook Author tool have been downloaded in substantial amount.

Since the release on Thursday, Apple’s free e-book creation tool, which is Mac-only & requires Operating System X Lion, was reportedly downloaded 90,000 times. The app helps to create digital books by dragging & dropping Word files, Keynote presentations, videos, and photos, though the interactive titles are distributed via Apple’s iBookstore.

However, the limitation may not frustrate many publishers as far as the potential savings are concerned. The research firm reveled production based on iBooks Author is almost 80% less than that for print textbooks.

Nielsen Survey Reveals Apple Taking On Android

Apple has good news. Though the giant Android has been persisting to dominate the smartphone world, those preferring iPhones are still involved in the list prominently, having almost half of the total smartphone buyers preferring iPhones in the last 3 months.

However, Results from the recent Nielsen survey reveal that amongst the buyers purchasing new devices in the last 3 months, 44.5% claimed to have an iPhone bought during the period. Last October, this was only 25.1%.

This may have an impact on availability of the Siri-driven iPhone-4S that arrived last year, though it picked up steam because people laid down their cash for the iPhone-4S anyway. 57 percent of those choosing iPhone said that they chose the 4S specifically.

On the other hand, Android still possesses the edge among the U.S smartphone users as 46.3% Android smartphone owners were surveyed in the 4th quarter of 2011 and 30% of whom claiming to have iPhone.
