Lady Gaga on Engagement

Concerts were at the heart of my social life for years. I loved live music, I still live music, however there is a BUT

When a friend phoned to see if I wanted to go and see a favourite band at Manchester Arena, I said “No”. Why? Because for me the arena’s are too big, they are too impersonal. Yes they allow a spectacular show but the reason for going has changed. If they are a band with no show as such, it doesn’t interest me….if it is a Lady Gaga, Pink who put on a “show” then I want to go…

The internet is changing my engagement level. I want personal – smaller venues. If not personal then I want exciting, I want to be entertained – Pink.

This may sound specific to music but the more I see consumer behaviour or even employee interactions then I see the same thing….Personal or entertaining.

Working with leaders this week on announcing a significant change program, we made sure that large, ‘town hall’ meetings had the entertainment value rather than pure information. We also highlighted how to break down the communication into personal sessions, which illustrate the empathy and understanding of what change means…

Social media is changing the way people engage with communication – it can be more demanding to us, but I also think it can be more rewarding…
