How to do Twitter Marketing

Twitter is a social networking site that is a product of the internet. It is an excellent tool to communicate with thousands of like minded people and also an excellent tool to spread any message. Remember the recent riots in England erupted as twitter was the medium to pass messages to all people to assemble. Twitter posts almost 5 million messages every day and an estimated 800 million make use of this social site.

With such a vast reach, it is but natural that this site is also used to market a product. The rules of the game here are a little different and if you are ingenious, then you can be a success on twitter to market yourself or your product. It is important to understand that the basic ingredients of twitter are short messages which are posted on the site or passed between people. These messages are referred to as tweets and users of this social site learn to tweet short messages of about 140 characters or less.

A fact that has now emerged is that a brand and Twitter do have a link. How is that? It is estimated that about 200 million people tweet every day. So in case you can put in a worthwhile tweet about you or your product, the possibilities are endless. People who like what you have said can forward your tweet to others. This often referred to as re-tweeting. Just imagine the exposure you can get in case your tweet is re-tweeted. It could reach a vast audience. But the important point is not to do self promotion. That could boomerang and instead of getting a re-tweet, your tweet could die out. Again this is not very difficult, if you have good background knowledge and have a worthwhile tweet. Thus a tweet can be an excellent foray for brand marketing, but you must use the platform judiciously.

The short messages of Twitter are the clue to further your product. Mostly people are not keen to read long and verbose notes, so in case you can tweet your product in a shirt and sweet tweet, it’s more likely to interest the reader. However be clear as to what your aim is and whom you want to target. If you really have something worthwhile to market, it will most likely be re-tweeted and will also build a trust with your customers. You could even tweet some after sales and service back up info. This will go a long way in helping you to establish your brand.

Follow some basic rules for marketing on twitter. Many have been eminently successful. Bear in mind

  •  Be Helpful. Twitter is a social site and people want to connect. Nothing better than being helpful and building up your own brand followers. Remember hard selling will not work in twitter, hence approach the members with a plea of being a help and then market your product.
  •  Communicate.   Remember that the key to marketing is two way traffic. So communicate and give your opinions as well. Take some time to examine your followers profile and approach them with that in mind.

Bear in mind that Twitter is a powerful tool and the ability to make use of it, will depend a lot on your commonsense and ability to integrate with the site.
